Love the margarita's! Great food and ambience. They recently updated the ceiling and paint. Great servers and wonderful family operation.

Torreon was my favorite Mexican restaurant in Overland Park when I lived there. I actually stumbled across it by accident with my then-boyfriend, and we absolutely fell in love with it. The food is really good and tastes very fresh and authentic. You can tell the cooks put a lot of love into it. As a vegetarian at the time, I really appreciated the fact that they use no lard in their cooking, meaning the refried beans were fair game for me. I typically went for the Señorita combo: an avocado tostada, nacho, a cheese and onion enchilada, and a veggie taco. It was more than filling--we ALWAYS brought home leftovers--and the prices were very reasonable. The margaritas here are awesome, as a few people have already mentioned. We would typically order a carafe and finish it off by the end of the meal. The raspberry version, available in warmer months, is REALLY tasty. To finish off the meal, we always went for the sopapillas. They were fresh, hot, and crispy, and the candle-warmed honey definitely sold us. Such a clever little addition to an already delicious dessert. Someone in the Ibarra family was always there when we went, and they are the nicest people you would ever want to meet. They greeted us on the way in and, in many cases, sat us at our tables personally. They were conversational and always took the time to check on us at some point during the meal to be sure everything was going okay. The only downside to the restaurant is that it could sometimes get very loud when it was full, owing to the fact that it isn't very large. That number of people in such a small space can really drive the volume up. The size of the restaurant also pretty much ensures a bit of a wait on busier nights, but that was something we never minded putting up with. The reward was always well worth it.

This place is awesome. You can only get lunch there on Friday, but they are open for dinner every night. The food is fresh and tasty. The owners, family and staff are friendly and courteous. The guacamole is outstanding, and they have the best glow in the dark margaritas you'll find anywhere. An outdoor meal on their patio in the early summer on a Friday night is a great experience. Highly recommend Torreon.

We came in for a late dinner about 8pm. The patio was full so we sat inside there was only 2 tables and were placed right next to them. That table was having a conservation with an employee behind the service counter so they were talking loudly back and forth. We received our appetizer dip after our food. You have to pay for chips and salsa and the container for chips was very small and service was very slow. We got the BIG FISHBOWL that suppose to be REALLY BIG and it wasn't margarita and overpriced at $7.75 and there was no prices in the menu. We were constantly asking for more water or tea. About 8:45pm the waiter announces the kitchen is closing did we want to order dessert since we just received our order we said no. The bathrooms smelled nice but doesn't look like they have been cleaned in a while. The small cramped seating area was not appealing. On the humid day the a/c didn't appear to be working as well. We would recommend you stay away and spend your money else where!!

Love this place. It's so cute I want to live in this restaurant. The food is excellent, and is very intimate!

Worst chips and salsa ever. Salsa had some heat but no other flavor; it was like spicy tomato sauce. Chips were not light and crispy; over fried. The margarita was a scary green color and tasted even worse. The entree was ok. The burrito and tamale were decent but the enchilada was sad. The whole plate was covered in nacho cheese sauce like from a convenience store. Really? The rice was awful. It had no flavor and wasn't fluffy. Definitely DO NOT recommend this place.

I love this place! The avocado enchiladas are incredible and the green margaritas are fun and strong. The place is tiny so be prepared to wait unless you get there right when it opens. The service is friendly. This is a nice casual mexican restaurant with good food. My only complaints are that the price of the drinks are a bit too steep and the seating is very cramped. Be prepared to be friends with everyone around you because you will squeezed in right next to them.

I decided to sit on the patio which had a nice little atmosphere. The chips and salsa was decent. I ordered the chili rellanos and a red chunky chili sauce and it tasted a bit spoiled or not fresh. I will never return because there is no way you serve old food to a customer and expect them to make referrals or return for that matter.

This is one of my favorite sit down Mexican restaurants. It's small, dark, and cozy. They have huge margarita fishbowls. I remember the owner Denise when she was just a child 30 years ago working as a server at the restaurant owned by her mother Betty. I was just a small child, but even then Torreon's was a treat. I loved the hot honey kept warm by candles to pour on my sopapillas. There was always plenty of food. As I got older I learned to appreciate the huge margaritas provided. This place brings back so many memories of good times. I'm happy to learn its still going strong.

I love the set up...Very cute little restaurant but the chicken quesadilla I got was not very good. Way too much refried beans in it and they put what looks like a slice of cheese on top....

Last place I would expect to find good Mexican food. I came here with a couple of co-workers after work for dinner. Being from LA/OC/SD, I was a little skeptical about how good this place would be. I came here with an open mind and low expectations and this place blew me out of the water. We had their famous margaritas; I'm not sure why it was neon green, but it was actually pretty tasty (and strong). We tried their half-stack enchiladas (it's not on the menu... just a smaller portion), and it was pretty legit. Great sauce, soft tortillas, tender and pieces of chicken; everything came together quite well. My only complaint is this restaurant is too crowded. It's difficult to maneuver between the tables when you have curves like me (fat ass). Oh well, the people that come here are pretty friendly and don't mind if you knock over their stuff with your butt. Overall, A+ experience! A little about my credentials: I first got into cooking & food when I was in college. After being rejected by numerous girls and getting zero action, I decided it was time for a change. I needed a new makeover to boost my geeky image. I applied for a cooking position at a Mediterranean-Italian Restaurant near my home and learned to cook all sorts of dishes. I never became a professional chef, but I continue to enjoy & love food. 9 years later and 55 lbs heavier, I have a new passion for traveling and trying different foods around the world.

Coming from Denver, I have been trying to find a great Mexican restaurant in O.P. Many people recommended this place, so I gave it a try. The service was good and the margaritas were strong but the food was not spicy at all! The guacamole tasted like just smashed avacados. I added salsa to it to give it more flavor. My cheese enchiladas were not melted all the way through and had a very bland sauce on the top. My daughter had a burrito and they had poured cheese sauce on it...not real cheese! I guess my search continues.

I love the atmosphere here. Sitting on the patio is fun and intimate. Inside, it's a bit more like a cafe where you are saying hello to the table next to you. It is small and quaint. The food is always good here and I do enjoy the service. It is a nice place to take a date. My issue is the drinks have way too much alcohol in them. I have seen another review stating the drinks were too watered down. Not on the night we were there - we were really worried about driving and ended up having a friend drive for us. We each had one mini-margarita. We didn't even drink all of our mini margarita because it was way too strong. A guy sitting near us had a jumbo margarita and also discussed how there was way too much alcohol in his drink. By the way, the mini margarita is $6.95 and the jumbo margarita is $7.95. If you are going to get a margarita, get a jumbo margarita and split it. If you have a drink here, make sure you have a designated driver. The manager needs to realize if you put less alcohol in a drink, customers will buy more than one drink. Whew! One drink did me in. Never again. But it is a nice place to eat some good Mexican. Not as good as Frontera's, but the atmosphere is more cozy than Frontera's.

This off-the-beaten-path restaurant is known for their margaritas, and now I know why! If you have more than one, plan on a cab ride home. This is a family owned place, and the family is there to greet you! The restaurant is very small, so there is often a wait. The food is good - nothing fancy or trendy, just good Mexican food! I had the fish tacos (they are not on the menu, but they usually have them) and they hit the mark. Others in my party had the stacked enchilada (kind of like a Mexican lasagna - layered tortillas) and tacos. Everything was really good and the portions were nice, but not huge, which I appreciate since you eat a meal in itself with the chips and salsa. I'll be back, next time with a DD!

This is one of those blink and you miss it kind of places. Doesn't help that it's nestled right behind the Phillips 66 station at 87th and Santa Fe in Overland Park, KS. Inside the restaurant is small. Ok it's actually tiny. The patio area is pretty awesome though and a great place to sit in the warm summer air and drink antifreeze margaritas. Yes I just said antifreeze margaritas. Once you go there and see the color of the margaritas you will understand exactly what I am talking about. This is honestly one of my favorite margarita and taco joints in the metro. Especially if it's warm and I can chill out on the patio. There are honestly few places in the metro with better margaritas in my opinion. The ones here have a unique coloring, excellent taste and you won't be able to stop at just one.

I expected more. The Tuesday special didn't amount to much, three small tacos for $7. The waitress was not very attentive. We were shocked to see that each 10 oz margarita was considered a "fish bowl", and cost $7. I might be able to appreciate a 4-star review as neighborhood pride. But the rating on yelp is quite inflated. Those margaritas aren't worth $6 even on $1 off Mondays. The food is not spectacular. The patio overlooks the back of a gas station. It looks like I'm still in the hunt for a weeknight hangout.

This is the quintessential neighborhood Mexican restaurant serving simply good food for 48 years. This is the kind of place where the wait staff will learn your name after a couple of visits and on weekends you can see three generations of the owning family. Specials: fajitas on Wed and fishbowl margaritas using their "family secret" mix (available at the counter or online).

Not a bad place to go get plastered with food. The grub here is typical of northern Mexican cuisine (The Restaurant is named after the state of Torreon). Food is decent and the chips & dip are okay. Spinach dip is pretty good, but not better than say, Mi Ranchito. What makes it stand out by far is the margaritas. The owner claims to be the first establishment in the KC area to offer them and they are very decent. Perfect balance of booze and fluff. This also seems to be an extremely popular place for families. So if you got kids, +1.

Service and food make a restaurant. So far today service is lacking so bad I am not sure super awesome food will make up for this disaster. This has been one of the worst restaurant experiences we have experienced to date. Seated on patio at 515pm, at 530pm we were asking if we had a server and could get some water. We already had two baskets of chips delivered from the chip guy, he was on it but the server was slacking. I asked the host if she could send our server over, she said yes but she has a big table too. I DON'T CARE about a table of ten, it's just us and them. She comes over and drops waters off and takes her sweet time coming back for a drink order, we ordered the fish bowl margs which came in plastic solo style cups (hmm). Cutting to the chase. We order two nachos and two tamales, server doesn't ask about sides at all and when we realize this we ask her about them. She said specifically that tamales do not come with sides, but if we wanted them it would be extra. My brother in law asked if she could bring the menu back for a minute, she then changed her tune to "if you want sides I can get them at no charge". We said just bring the menu, the menu cleared the dilemma as it clearly said they include two sides. He ordered beans and rice, she walks away with out asking me what I wanted. At this point she was snotty as they get, so it was by by tip time. They sides comes out beans and rice for both of us, which was fine as I probably would have ordered the same anyhow. On the way out we stopped at the host stand and asked for the chip guy/kid and tipped him $10, we said do not share it because she didn't earn it with that attitude. A women behind the bar asked if everything was ok, I asked if she was the manager and she was not but pointed to the guy at the end of the bar as the manager. I simply said he should visit the tables and not sit at the bar, we never saw him on the patio at all. I explained that this was one of the worst dining experiences since we moved to the KC area. Managers need to be making rounds, it;s that simple. Get off your ass and visit the tables. The food was decent, we may go back but be damned if she was our server ever again. Rant. over.

I visited Torreon for the first time on Friday night. We got there not long after it opened, so there was no wait and we were seated right away. I ordered the beef gorditas with spanish rice and refried beans with a raspberry margarita. Positives: -The food was excellent, and the portions were decent sized. Like most Mexican places, it came with unlimited chips and salsa. -The raspberry margarita (a summer-only special) was awesome...not a huge "fruity-drink" fan, but these were tasty. Negatives: -This restaurant is very small...so get there early. They are also only open for dinner (5pm-10pm) and lunch on Fridays. And that is it. -Since it's so small, it can get packed in there a bit loud. It wasn't a big deal for us, but might not ok with everybody. Definitely a little hidden gem in Overland Park, I'll be back to Torreon again!

Great margaritas. Good food. Tight fit. Only complaint is that the owner's perfume when she visited the neighboring table was overwhelming!

I like that this place is tucked away right off of 87th and they have a nice ambiance on their patio. The service is also usually pretty good, but that is where the positives end. I've probably been here a dozen times and I'm not sure why I keep coming back. The food here is no bueno. I had a taco that was already soggy by the time it was served. I also ordered a chicken and cheese enchilada. What I received what a piece of fried cheese sitting on top over dry, shredded chicken. I'm not even sure what you would call that. The margaritas here are strong, but taste awful. The house margaritas are neon green. We were there with a group of nine of us and six people got sick later. I may come back, but it will only to be to have some cold beers on the patio.

My Wife and I both loved the food here. Sure it was a little pricey but it was so tasty that I almost didn't mind. Plus, the portion sizes are big enough to take some home and enjoy it again. My wife got a combo plate and I got the chicken quesadillas. I would just like to say that I have never had such a tasty and packed full quesadilla. The chicken was hand pulled and soooo flavorful and moist. My wife, a contasure of salsas, love the salsa and chips. The queso, although expensive $7, was so wonderful! It tasted like real cheese and was nice and creamy. I spoke to the owner who said that this was was first Mexican restaurant in Overland Park and that she has owned it for 35 or 40 years. She was very friendly and actively helping out the staff. I also loved that the menu said that "well behaved children were welcome"! Good, I agree! The restaurant its self is in an old home and small but pleasant. My one complaint about the size was that noise level was pretty loud. I give it 4 instead of 5 stars based on the price and noise level. We will surely be back next time we have that Mexican food itch.

My family makes it a point to visit Torreon every time we make the trek to KC. Torreon is the perfect example of my favorite type of restaurant: a casual local gem that is content to make fantastic food and not try to become a mini-chain. I believe that Torreon has been around for quite awhile; my wife discovered it while in college. Our visits here have always been topnotch; friendly service and fabulous food in a cozy atmosphere. The whole place seats maybe 50 people, and lines can get pretty long if you don't get there early. About that, don't leave just because there is a line, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT. Start off with one of the margaritas, they are fantastic. You can also get the house margarita mix to take home and mix your own. Chips and salsa are standard, freshly made every day, and regularly replenished by the excellent waitstaff. I order the tamales every time; they are simply the best I have ever had, anywhere. Hand wrapped in corn husks and served with homemade red sauce...yum. It makes me want to drive up to KC just thinking about it. the combo platters are all fantastic, and have generous portions of tamales, enchiladas (chicken, beef, and cheese), burritos, tostadas... too much to list here. needless to say, it's all excellent. the sides of re fried (or black) beans and rice are good as well. Dessert...just three words: fried ice cream. If you're in the Overland Park area and haven't been here before, do yourself a favor and go. You won't be disappointed.

Hands down my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Overland Park area. I went to El Torreon because I heard the margaritas were amazing (and they are!). What I came to find out is that the food is just as good as the margaritas. Unlike most Mexican restaurants these days, you can tell that El Torreon uses fresh ingredients. My recommendations for when you go are: Margarita (of course), Flat Stack chicken enchiladas, and the Sopapillas for desert.

YUM!! I love this place...a perfect spot for indulging. Not only is the food fresh & unique, the margaritas are fabulous! Just make sure that you have a DD if you'll be indulging in more than one...they are stronger than they taste! In the summer, the tiny patio is cozy & fun. After a few regular visits, everyone who works there recognized us & always make us feel very welcome. We love coming here for a casual weekend treat!

Been enjoying dinner here most every Monday nite for about 45 years now..so, I feel qualified to say that this IS THE epitome of the home cooked Mexican food establishment....JUST THE BEST. Hands down, the BEST margarita in town..STRONG...and the flat stack enchiladas are my favorite of anywhere..and try that fried egg on top..really makes it special! Warm chips, a nice spicy salsa--just right..or ask for the HOT..and the espinacha dip is a house speciality..good blend of four cheeses, spices and seasonings, and spinach..creamy smooth and addictive.. The burritios are hubby's favorites, and they are great on their own, but he adds black beans inside his chicken burritos..they are amazing! All the standards are here, tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and tostadas..but do try some of the other house specialities Fajitas are earthy and good, with fresh flour torts for rolling up your own, they have beef, chicken, and also shrimp..very very fresh..you can taste the difference..OH, ...try the fried tacos too.. very unique..and GOOD.! Seating can be a little crowded..but that is because most everyone loves this place, and it is a weekly stop for many...a party going on every nite. If you like real Mexican food..eat here..if you like the typical fast foods, or chains...you most likely should stick with those. THIS isn't it..thank goodness! This place isn't fast, as the food is cooked from scratch, so don't go in and think you can be in and done in half an hour..good food takes time..the servers are great..they remember your name,,and, what you ordered the last time you came in..a good and friendly place with great food!! Don't miss the REAL soppapillas...as they are not the doughy kinds you get every place else..again FRESH MADE..just for you..and there are 8 to an order, but you can get a half order too..and the heated honey drizzled over the top and then dusted with cinnamon sugar.. doesn't get any better than that.. Summertime..there is a nice outdoor patio..which adds to the seating..and the festivities too. and, DO NOT MISS THEIR CINCO DE MAYO...entertainment, fabulous specials...LOTS OF WHOOPEEE! try it out, and you'll soon be one of the regulars.. What a downer!!! Cinco de Mayo turn out to be SuckO de Mayo!! This review is not about the quality of the food or service (although it's average) it's about the attitude and management style of the owner! We invited friends to join us at Torreon's to celebrate Cinco de Mayo - we were told we needed to get there early to get a seat and that people didn't leave when they got there! We just finished our meal and was having a drink when the waitress brought our check??? and said we needed to give up our table because there was a big crowd waiting (duh - it's Cinco de Mayo - and why didn't they come early??)! I went to the owner to complain and it was obvious she could care less - all she seemed interested in doing was moving people through like cattle so she could make more money! She seemed to care less about developing a long term customer relationship! As we were leaving I told her she wouldn't like the reviews I would be writing - she took pictures of our license plates and said she was going to call the cops! What a petty attitude! We will NEVER spend another dime at the dive!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
